  • Back-to-School Snack: Caramel Banana School Buses

If you’re a parent, the back-to-school season is a time to rejoice and celebrate (hehe). However, if you’re a kid, the beginning of school marks the sad end of summer and ten long months of homework (ugh). To help make the transition easier on the kiddos and ease their back-to-school blues, create fun lunchbox snacks the kids can look forward to enjoying at school.

Kernel Season’s Caramel Banana School Buses are easy to make and fun to eat. Yellow bananas are the perfect fruit to turn into school buses. Plus, they are easy to peel and sprinkle with Kernel Season’s Caramel or Milk Chocolate Caramel seasoning for a yummy, healthy lunchtime snack or afterschool sweet treat.

Ingredients:

Chocolate for melting (white, dark or milk)

Mini bananas

Kernel Season’s Caramel or Milk Chocolate Caramel seasoning

White gumdrops

Black icing gel

Red sour tape candy

Mini Oreo cookies

Chocolate

Colorful nonpareils

(all ingredients can be found at your local grocery store)

Tools:

Scissors

Double broiler or microwave safe bowl

All the right ingredients for back to school banana buses

Melt chocolate over a double broiler on the stove or in the microwave in a microwave safe dish. Once the chocolate is melted, dip four mini Oreo cookies into the chocolate. Before the chocolate dries, press two Oreos to each side of the banana for the school bus wheels.

Next, roll out white gumdrops with a rolling pin until they are flat. Then, using a cake decorating piping tip as a cookie cutter, cut out circles from the flattened gumdrops. The key is to choose a piping tip with large enough holes. Once the round gumdrop cutouts have been made, use the melted chocolate to glue the gumdrops to the sides of the bananas. The gumdrops should be placed just above the Oreos to look like the windows of the school bus. Lastly, press a few nonpareils into each gumdrop to represent the kids riding the bus. If the nonpareils don’t stick, use a little melted chocolate.

Flatten gumdrops to create windows on the banana school buses

To create the “stop sign” for the school buses, use scissors to cut the red sour tape into octagons (or close to it). Dip one edge of the stop sign into the melted chocolate and hold against the banana, towards the end. Gently blow cool air onto the stop sign until the chocolate hardens. Once the stop signs are secure, take the black piping gel and draw a few horizontal lines on the bus.

When ready to eat, peel, slice and sprinkle bananas with some sweet Kernel Season’s seasoning.

The perfect back to school snack for every kid
